Metropolis explores the city through fragments: architecture, façades, infrastructure, colour, pattern and the details encountered while moving through urban space.
This is not about great landmarks but the structures we pass every day, the backs and sides of buildings, transport infrastructure, concrete, signs, windows and unexpected interruptions of colour. Through framing, saturated colour and altered perspectives, familiar urban environments become compositions of their own.
Metropolis is also inspired by my love for modernist, socialist realism, the Bauhaus, brutalism and old buildings connected to the everyday person having an everyday life. I am also influenced by magical realism, expressionism, surrealism
These photographs look for character in what is functional, ordinary, awkward or overlooked, tracing the visual rhythms through which cities reveal themselves if you only look and listen because walls do talk…
